Outdoor Living – My Garden Style

I am 100% an outdoor person. Outdoor living, eating, drinking, exercising, relaxing, working (when I can), the whole shebang. The garden was the main reason I bought Holly Cottage in 2010, and because of the state it was in, one of the reasons Mr W didn’t want to buy it…..Since I won that battle my outdoor space has been slowly evolving. Thought it’s fair to say the evolutionary pace has certainly picked up since I started my own interior design business. FYI constantly updating your own home because you see new and beautiful things every day is a hazard of the job I’m prepared to accept….

Outdoor Living

Our first major installation was the summer house, which has also evolved every year with new finds.

Last years project was the outdoor kitchen which you can read all about here.

This year I’ve been updating the furniture and soft furnishings, and since I posted a few pics on Insta and Facebook people have been telling me they love the look and asking where things are from. So here you are, everything you need to know all in one convenient place.

My Garden Style

I’m a big lover of Scandinavian style interiors; the clean lines, light and airy spaces, simple but beautifully designed furniture, and the use of wood and soft natural textiles like linen and wool. I also like the neutral colours associated with Scandi interiors, but outdoor, particularly in summer I like a bit more colour. And the colour I’m most drawn to when I’m scouring the shops for new additions to my outdoor living space is cobalt blue.

To me it’s the colour of a bright blue summer sky, and the sea on holiday postcards, it just screams summer to me. So consequently my outdoor living space is a little bit Scandi and a lot of summer.

New additions

The purchase I’ve had most interest in is my new egg chair, which I bought online from Hayes Garden Centre but is now sold out (don’t worry see below for alternative). It’s so comfy I fell asleep in it last weekend. Mr W did the same with the Sunday papers.

I would love an outdoor rug but there are way too many birds flying and pooping over our garden, and I’d need to move it every time I lit the fire pit. So instead I bought 8 large outdoor floor tiles from Walls & Floors and just laid them on top of the deck. They’re not a trip hazard as there’s always either a table or the fire pit on top of them. I no longer have to worry about wood falling out of the fire pit and setting the deck on fire, and I just hose them down to get rid of the soot and ash from the fire pit. Genius (well I think so anyway).

This year I also added the two dark grey armchairs you can see above and below as I needed more seating. The light grey wooden sofa and chairs were from B&Q a few years ago but are now discontinued. I would have preferred more wooden furniture but as Mr W is the one that has to paint it every year I treated him to faux rattan this time.
